200 years ago, Inuit from icy Labrador on Canada's east coast set foot on Saxon soil for the first time. From June 2025, this historic encounter will be the focus of the special exhibition "Thin Ice - Inuit on Show". The young Inuit George and Mary left their homeland in the early 1820s with the American captain Samuel Hadlock and toured Europe with a show of their indigenous way of life and culture. In 1825, they stayed at Moritzburg Castle, where George entertained the entire court with his demonstration of a capsize roll in a kayak on the castle pond.

On the upper floor of Moritzburg Castle, special ethnographic objects illustrate Hadlock's journey. Original everyday objects such as clothing, weapons and jewellery of the Labrador Inuit have now travelled to Saxony once again to tell our visitors about this part of the past. Graphics by Schadow and drawings by the Inuit George Niakungitok are precious objects in their uniqueness and documentation. Visitors will not only see historical artifacts but also hear the voices of today's Inuit, offering a personal and contemporary perspective on their culture.
